Bio
Aaron Bossen is a glass scientist, materials educator, and artist. He holds a BS and MS in Materials Science & Engineering from UW-Madison. His research on fundamental glass science has been published in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society, MRS Bulletin, and Acta Biomaterialia. He is currently a PhD candidate in Materials Science & Engineering at Penn State University and Manager of the Penn State Glass Studio.
Studio Practice
The way I make is guided by my training as a materials scientist, which roots my practice in a systematic understanding of material and natural phenomena. The complexity of glass as a state of matter provides further inspiration for much of my work. Within materials taxonomy, glass is defined by negation, as the glassy state exists outside the conventional categorizations of solid matter (i.e. non-equilibrium, non-crystalline, non-ergodic, etc). To know and work with glass is thus an ongoing effort to provide an affirmative definition for this elusive material.
